The coronavirus COVID–19 pandemic is the defining global health crisis of our time and one of the greatest challenges we have ever faced. The European Pressure Ulcer Advisory Panel (EPUAP) is supporting the COVID–19 pandemic response through the development of a CLINICAL WEBINAR summarizing key recommendations for the prevention and management of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) – related skin injuries and pressure ulcer prevention in prone (re)positioning.
Positioning COVID-19 patients suffering from severe acute respiratory distress in the prone position improves survival as compared to supine positioning. However, an increase in pressure ulcer development has been reported and new challenges to protect the patients’ skin and tissue have emerged. Healthcare professionals caring for COVID-19 patients are required to wear PPE. With round the clock PPE wearing, skin issues are emerging among healthcare workers in areas hit hard by COVID-19.

WEBINAR #3: Biomechanics and the impact on PU development

In my webinar, I will explore the currently known aetiology of PUs from a biomechanical and mechanobiological perspective, with focus on the potential PU risks associated with use of medical devices during the current COVID-19 pandemic. I will also describe the worrying mechanobiological links between the known aetiology of PUs and COVID-19. Lastly, I will discuss relevant bioengineering research that is underway and the long-term research & development work needed for minimizing the risk of DRPUs.

COVID-19 has brought the effects of pressure ulcers (PUs, also known as pressure injuries) and device-related pressure ulcers (DRPUs) in particular, into sharp focus. With the unprecedentedly high usage of critical care medical devices for the diagnosis and treatment of patients who have COVID-19 with breathing problems, such as noninvasive ventilation by means of continuous positive airway pressure masks or invasive ventilation and feeding tubing in the more severe cases, the incidence of DRPUs has risen starkly.

Amit Gefen, PhD
Professor Amit Gefen received the B.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering and M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering from Tel Aviv University in 1994, 1997, and 2001, respectively. During 2002-2003 he was a post-doctoral fellow at the University of Pennsylvania, USA. He is currently a Full Professor with the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the Faculty of Engineering of Tel Aviv University and the Herbert J. Berman Chair in Vascular Bioengineering.

This webinar considers epidemiological and biomechanical evidence in the development of an applied clinical conceptual framework for pressure ulcer development. It goes on to describe the application of these principles, through the development of a new generation Risk Assessment Instrument, PURPOSE-T for use in clinical practice.

Dr. Susanne Coleman is Treasurer of EPUAP and an NIHR Post-Doc Research Fellow working within the portfolio of pressure ulcer prevention research including risk assessment instrument development, systematic reviews and intervention development and evaluation.

Prof. Jane Nixon is Past EPUAP President and leads a portfolio of pressure ulcer prevention research including large trials; risk factor cohort studies; systematic reviews; risk assessment instrument development and quality of life instrument development.

This webinar will focus on how to engage organisations in the implementation of pressure ulcer prevention protocols. In doing so this webinar will discuss how to affect change, what to include in a protocol and will finish with a real world example of a campaign aimed at achieving zero pressure ulcers within a large university hospital.

The prevalence/incidence of pressure ulcers are often used as quality indicators and as such are linked to direct clinical care provision. In order to achieve these quality indicators it is important that organisations have consistent adherence to evidence based pressure ulcer prevention protocols. Achieving consistency can be challenging given the dynamic nature of healthcare settings. However, empowering staff to take the lead in pressure ulcer prevention within their own clinical settings has been shown to yield great success. This webinar will focus on how to engage organisations in the implementation of pressure ulcer prevention protocols. In doing so this webinar will discuss how to affect change, what to include in a protocol and will finish with a real world example of a campaign aimed at achieving zero pressure ulcers within a large university hospital.
