Emeritus Professor of Bioengineering and Tissue Health

It is with great sadness that we share the news of the death of Emeritus Professor Dan Bader who was a physicist by training (BSc, MSc) with a PhD in Bioengineering at the University of Southampton. Dan leaves a lasting legacy in Southampton and beyond, having established successful research groups in the UK and overseas. His move to Southampton in 2011 from the School of Engineering and Materials Science, Queen Mary University of London was motivated by a desire to translate his research into clinical practice, where he led the development of the Clinical Academic Facility, at Southampton General Hospital.

Throughout his career spanning 40 years, Dan achieved many accolades including the UK BioMedEng18 Legacy Prize in Bioengineering (2018) and Senior Investigators Award by the European Pressure Ulcer Advisory Panel (2011). He was a Fellow of the UK Tissue Viability Society and Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine (IPEM). Dan was an incredible source of knowledge and a driving force in research and education. He was a passionate advocator helping direct attention onto important clinical problems including pressure ulcers. He made significant contributions in and helped to elevate the topic of skin and soft tissue biomechanics. He cared deeply for others, encouraging and supporting individuals at various stages of their careers, to develop professionally and lead their own groups. Dan was Chief Editor of Journal of Tissue Viability (2010-2022), increasing the impact factor by three-fold in this time.

For many years, Dan was committed to the European Pressure Ulcer Advisory Panel. As a trustee, he provided excellent organizational and content support to the organization. His professional knowledge and his personal charm were always inspiring and stimulated deep discussions. He organized and chaired the second European Pressure Ulcer Advisory Panel Focus Meeting on Skin Health and Microclimate in Southampton in 2014, which had a lasting effect on this field of research.

His desire to push the boundaries of scientific endeavour will leave a lasting impact on all those who worked with him. He has published over 220 scientific papers and edited three books which are widely recognised in the field. He will be remembered not only for his academic work, but also his enthusiasm for sport (Chelsea FC), music, politics, travel, and theatre, with an ever-present sense of humour. A meeting with Dan would always meander into all aspects of life, with laughs shared and advice given freely. He will be deeply missed by friends and colleagues.
